Your Holidays Don’t Have to Go Up In Smoke: Fire Safety Through the Holidays

12/3/2024 (Permalink)

Home decorated for the holiday season The last thing you want is a fire in your home or business this holiday season.

You have big plans this season. Holiday parties for business. Meals with friends. Gift-giving with family. For most Americans, this is one of the busiest times of year. With everything going on, the last thing you want is a fire in your home or business, especially when there are simple steps you can take to avoid them.

Here are some common fire hazards you should be aware of.

  • Is your fireplace ready for Santa? Be sure your tree and any easily combustible decorations are a safe distance away; a dry Christmas tree is just what a spark or ember is looking for to ignite.
  • Be conscious of your candles. While those little guys might not pack a big flame like a fireplace, they can do just as much damage if not supervised. Never leave a candle unattended. Be sure no tinsel or other hanging decorations can swing in the path of the flame. Guests, children, and pets may knock over a candle, so placing them in safe locations is another way to reduce the hazard.
  • Check your Christmas lights. Your vintage lights and decorations have been in storage for a while. That time in boxes is the perfect opportunity for rodents to find them. Be sure to thoroughly inspect your treasures before displaying them. Any broken bulbs or exposed wiring is extremely dangerous and can start a blaze in the blink of an eye. Do not overload your outlet with too many lights.
  • Don’t forget the turkey! Not only can burning dinner take you to a 24-hour diner for the holiday, but unknowingly leaving on an oven or stove can lead to a disaster in the kitchen.

The holiday season is a time of fun. But if a fire does occur in your home or business this season, it will be okay. SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties can help you make it “Like it never even happened®.” Call us today. 765-575-8654
