Prevent Fire Damage With These Tips

Fire damage in your home can lead to major destruction but can often be prevented. Many don’t realize the simple prevention steps that can lead to their house being less likely to catch fire. By being more aware and taking precautions you can save yourself from the headache of a house fire- and from the damage that follows.
The most important thing to remember is to test your smoke alarms regularly. The batteries in your smoke alarm don’t last forever and will need to be changed periodically. By testing the alarms throughout your home, you are making sure they are still fully functional and will do their job in case of an emergency.
Be sure to keep your stove and oven cleaned out. Small bits of food and drippings can begin to pile up in the bottom of the oven, which can lead to small fires occurring. By cleaning out your oven every so often, it eliminates the chance of a fire… and you now have a clean oven!
Always check your dryer’s lint trap after each dry cycle. Get into the habit of cleaning out the lint trap after your remove your clothes from the dryer when they are finished drying. The lint can begin to build up and overheat, causing the dryer to catch on fire.
Practice caution with candles and never leave them burning for too long. Don’t leave candles unattended around small children or animals and keep them away from flammable objects. Always blow them out before you leave the house or go to sleep at night.
Fires cannot always be avoided, but precautionary measures can be taken to make them less likely. Keep a fire extinguisher around in case of emergency and call 911 should a fire occur. If you find yourself victim to a house fire, contact SERVPRO of Henry and Randolph Counties to take care of the mess afterwards- we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”
