Emergency Water Damage Tips For Your Home or Business

5/16/2017 (Permalink)

Did you know there are different types of water?

Category 1 Clean - water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants

Examples: Broken Pipe, Icemaker, Drain Overflow

Category 2 Gray - water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. May contain bacteria and viruses. Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated.

Examples: Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Roof Leak

Category 3 Black - water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes.

Examples: flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Until help arrives

for CLEAN water only

DO:

  • Shut off the water source if possible.

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.

  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.

  • Place aluminum foil under furniture legs, this can prevent staining.

  • Hang furs and leather goods separately at room temperature.

  • Remove Oriental or other colored rugs from wet carpeting.

  • Wipe excess water from wooden furniture, removing items from table first.

  • Remove valuable pictures/art to a safe dry place.

DON'T:

  • Do not use a household vacuum to remove water.

  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of areas where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

  • Do not leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpeting.

DO NOT attempt clean up of “BLACK” water yourself.
